An Approach to the Spirit of Carnival
These are some of the mythical characters that inhabit the streets of Barranquilla during carnival times, ephemeral beings who, with their movements and dances, imbue the festivities with a spiritual energy. Appearing as spirits in the streets, devoid of a ny trace of their human embodiment, they completely eliminate the humanity of those who bring them to life, generating a new being that dwells between man and mask.

This series of photographs emphasizes the symbolic empowerment that, through art and culture, members of the El Burro Corcoveón and Piglets Chaplin troupes from Galapa Atlantic have chosen to protect and promote the values and cultural traditions of rural carnival in their communities.

The influence of the Rio de Janeiro carnival and its media cult of image, glitter, perfect bodies, and decorated beauties has led to a proliferation of fantasy troupes in the Barranquilla carnival that emulate Brazilian costumes and are displacing the traditional practices of the Atlantic towns.

The desolate landscape serves as a metaphor for their cultural ecosystem and reflects the neglect and pressure to which the traditions of the communities in the Atlantic towns of Colombia are subjected.
